Country to Compare
Germany and The United States of America have the most things in common when
looking at the list of other countries to choose from. Germany like the U.S has a health care
system that the employer contributes too as well as the employee. Germany does however
have system that can provide them same level of care but at a fraction of the price by roughly
2/3s and per the PBS video “Sick around the world” this is due to the low cost of administration
of 6% which is a quarter of the US and the fact that the physicians in Germany are paid
significantly less (news + public affairs player: video, n.d.).
Access to care
All German residents have access to healthcare, which is also a new policy that was
started in the U.S with the Affordable Care Act. German citizen does have access to private
health care as well as public which is approximately 240 non-for profit sickness funds. 90% of
German citizens do utilize the public health care system (KHAZAN, 2014). Like America, if
citizens are not able to receive health care from your employer you can seek care through a
marketplace and pay is based on income which is the same as Germany. All citizens are
covered under the public health care system in Germany and this includes children, seniors who
are retired and the unemployed. In the United states retired citizens are covered under
Medicare and children if the parents don’t have access are covered by Medicaid. The
unemployed population is required to have health insurance in the US and should be able to
find coverage in the market place and have premiums covered by grants and government
subsidies.
Coverage of Medications
The cost of medications is considerably cheaper in Germany then in the U.S. One of the
major reasons for this is because the non-for profit sickness funds negotiate the price of
medications every year. Medication is included in the health coverage of the German citizen
with minimal co-pays (news + public affairs player: video, nd). Which is approximately 10% of
