DNP 801 Topic 8 DQ 1
What is the most important skill for success in your doctoral pursuit? Why? To be successful in my doctoral pursuit, the most important skill is reflection. It is well known reflection is important to learning; however, reflection is not limited to simply becoming a better learner. Reflection is also important towards becoming an emotionally competent person and nurse (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Purposeful reflective promotes critical thinking and critical questioning (Grand Canyon University 2018). Critical thinking and questioning is especially important to be able to understand and interpret literature; specifically empirical literature (Grand Canyon University 2018). According to Beckham and Riedford (2017) emotionally competent nurses are reflective as well as supportive towards: value-based units, safe work environments, professional ownership, and frequently demonstrate personal motivation. Incorporating reflection into as many aspects of a student’s life as possible has the potential to yield a professional, emotionally mature, academically eager doctorate student Grand Canyon University 2018). Associating reflection practices into a DPI project will allow a DNP student to find hidden gaps in nursing practice and identify ways to overcome the gaps that fit the clinical site’s values, goals, and overall missions. Practicing reflection with scholarly and professional pursuits will guide a doctoral student towards success in completing a doctoral program. Beckham, R., & Riedford, K. (2017). Emotional competence: Demonstrated performance. Medsurg Nursing: Official Journal of the Academy of MedicalSurgical Nurses, 26(2), 79-92. Grand Canyon University. (2018). DNP-801 Lecture 4.
