Hollywood vs. Reality

Across the world, movies are used for entertainment or educational purposes because

they are based on different themes that relate to real life. For instance, some movies rely on

political events, natural calamities, personal life experiences, or new challenges like the COVID-

19 pandemic. Despite movies being used for entertainment or educational purposes, some of

them portray real events being faced by people in different jurisdictions. This paper compares

and contrasts two movies- Olympus Has Fallen and The Contender. Further, it examines their

themes and contexts before comparing them with real-life being experienced every day.

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ is an action thriller film shot in America, and directed by Antoine

Fuqua in 2013. In this film, a North Korean guerrilla group assaults the White House to hold the

president hostage, before attempting to detonate nuclear warheads. However, Kang and his team

do not succeed in using American nuclear weapons because a secret service agent- Mike

Banning successfully rebels against the intruders and manages to save the president. ‘Olympus

Has Fallen’ portrays the importance of patriotism and how America, for many years, has

managed to host different nationalities making them American citizens in return. However, false

patriotism is exhibited by Americans like Dave Forbes who worked as a Secret Service Agent.

The film also highlights the sacrifice that secret service agents and military personnel make

while defending the country with their lives. In addition, Ruth McMillan who is the Secretary of

Defense strongly refuses to reveal Cerberus's secret codes despite being ordered by the president

to do so. In reality, ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ is equated to day-to-day life where individuals from

different countries like China, Russia, or India have American citizenship to show that they pay

allegiance to the United States (Mattes, 2017). However, some of them commit criminal

activities and reveal national secrets to American enemies. Similarly, American soldiers show
