Sustainable development Goals (SDG’s)
If you were asked what SDG’s are, what would you say in your own words?
Definition
Sustainable development goals, also referred to as Global Goals, are a universal call to
action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and
prosperity. The SDGs provide a more holistic approach to the three dimensions of
sustainable development namely, economic development, social inclusion, and
environmental sustainability.
Please refer to the SDG’s listed on page 6 and 7 of your reader
Why SDG’s and not MDG
The Millenium Development Goals (MDG’s) were developed in the context of
developed countries providing donor Aid to poor countries (including Africa), but SDG’s
are applicable to every country, rich or poor. While some countries have made
impressive gains in achieving health-related targets, others are falling behind, especially
those affected by high levels of HIV/AIDS, economic hardship or conflict.
The SDG’s are specific in terms of targets, are measurable, and can therefore be
quantified in monitoring the progress.
The SDG’s prioritize sustainable, inclusive economic growth and development at the
center of it all and emphasize the ability of countries to address their social challenges
by their own revenue generating capabilities
Kindly analyze further and provide reasons why the MDG’s were replaced by the SDG’s
