2.1 Outcomes
The outcomes of the learning unit are as appear on page 3 of your study guide
Introduction
Learning unit 2 focuses on the inter-relationship between environmental health and
public health and the impact of economic growth on sustainable development. It is
important to note that if there is no coordinated efforts to address environmental factors
that adversely affect our health, (on page 3 of the reader); this in turn influences
negatively on the health of the population or the public.
2.2 The relationship between Environmental health and Public health.
It is important to note that there is an interrelationship between Environmental health
and public health. In Frumkin(2010:xxxl), Environmental Health is defined as a branch
of public health that protects against the effects of environmental hazards that can
adversely affect health or the ecological balances essential to human health and
environmental quality(Agency for toxic substances and disease registry, US dept of
health and Human Services). Developments in public health dates way back before the
18nth century.
It simply means there is no public health without Environmental health and vice versa
2.3 The effects of economic growth on sustainable development
Achieving economic growth is a dream come true for every country, but it is not a
predictor of sustainable development. Economic growth is usually archived at a cost to
the environment because of environmental degradation and environmental pollution for
example. The effect on the ecosystem is also critical one.
Can you think of other effects caused by economic development on sustainable
development?
