RE: A qualitative study on the relationship between the Covid-19 pandemic and
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in South Africa
Dear Sir
This is simply a follow up on the discussion we had a week ago regarding my volunteer
work as a Unisa Psychology (honours) student at the Durban Metropolitan Police Service
Headquarters and my very particular interest in the percentage of Gender-Based Violence
cases that had been opened since March 2020 (the start of lockdown).
I do understand that many people across the world are feeling the impact of how deadly
this pandemic can be - however, GBV has become a bit of a pandemic on its own, not
just in the world but a close eye is on South Africa as headlines are being made
internationally. The rate is increasing significantly by the day and it is rather worrying.
I humbly request that you allow me to conduct research within your department as well
as for financial support to go on with this research.. I would appreciate it if you would
spare the time to engage with me with regards to the cases that have been opened within
the last year in comparison to the previous years to determine whether the lockdown had
significantly increased GBV in South Africa or not.
This proposal aims to research whether Gender-based Violence increased due to the
pandemic over the last year or if it had remained within the same bracket as previous
years. I will await your feedback
