Maternal/Child Exam #1 Study Guide Self Breast Exams: 1. Visual Inspection: Looking for color, contour, dimpling, red or rashes, swelling, changes in nipple direction or size. (Montgomery Glands are normal. They are the little white glands that resemble pimples at times. They release oil to lubricate the areola). 2. Raise Arms & Repeat Step #1 3. Palpate Nipple: Squeeze the nipple with pointer finger and thumb. You are looking for discharge. If you have had a child, you may be able to express some discharge. 4. Palpate Breast & Axilla: lay down w/pillow under shoulder of breast you are examining. Use finger pads of first 3 fingers and using dime-sized circular motions & 3 kinds of pressure (light, medium and firm) 5. Repeat Step #4, but Standing Up: Many do step #5 in the shower as their skin is more slippery. Use UP AND DOWN pattern until only the ribs are felt during each pass. If a Lump is Found: o Most tissues are not cancerous, but biopsy and/or mammography should be completed. Surgical Biopsy is the most accurate and takes all/part of the lump found. o Nurse should advise patient to f/u with her OB/GYN physician.
