In dry macular degeneration, the center of Degeneration the retina deteriorates. With wet macular degeneration, leaky blood vessels grow under the retina. Irregularly shaped cornea or lens that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina Irregular or abnormal curvature of the cornea causes light rays to focus on more than one area of Astigmatism the retina Cataract Opacification (clouding) of the lens of the eye. Can Mnemonic: significantly interfere with light transmission to the Congenital retina and the ability to perceive images clearly. Aging Toxicity (steroids, etc) Accidents Radiation (sunlight) Altered metabolism (diabetes mellitus) Cigarette smoking Conjunctivitis Inflammation of the conjunctiva. (Most common eye disease) Causes: Bacterial or Viral Infection Transition: Direct Contact (e.g. Hangs, Tissues, towels), Allergens, Chemical irritants, and Exposure to radiant energy such as UV Light from sun or tanning devices. - - -
