NERVOUS SYSTEM
Central Nervous System
PROTECTED: CEREBRO-SPINAL
3 connective tissue membranes = meninges
FLUID:
a fluid formed from blood
space between 2nd and 3rd layer is filled with cerebro-spinal
plasma in special areas in
fluid =acts as cushion
the walls of the ventricles
whole CNS & meninges enclosed within bony case of 2 separate
(cavities within the brain)
structures
cranium = protects brain and mechanical injuries
vertebral column = 33 irregular vertebrae surrounds spinal cord
= S-shaped curvature & cartilaginous discs prevent jarring of
CNS
BRAIN:
enlarged, upper part of the
spinal cord enclosed in a
bony cranium
top = cerebrum
back = cerebellum
lower = medulla oblongata
,NERVOUS SYSTEM
Central Nervous System
, NERVOUS SYSTEM
Central Nervous System
A. Cerebrum
STRUCTURE: FUNCTIONS:
divided into 2 hemispheres by longitudinal fissure
1. motor area in frontal lobe
held together by myelinated nerve fibres bundled to form corpus
= voluntary movement
callosum = communication between cerebral hemisphere &
2. sensory areas = receive &
cerebral cortex & lower parts of CNS
interpret impulses from
surface made of folds (gyri) & grooves (sulci) = enlarge SA
sense organs
deeper folds divide into 4 lobes = ventricles filled with
= hearing, tasting & smell in
cerebrospinal fluid
temporal lobe
outer 3mm = cerebral cortex = grey matter
= sight in occipital lobe
below = white matter = made of myelinated nerve fibres
=skin sensations in parietal lobe
3. association cortex =
higher mental activities such
as intelligence, memory and
conciousness= emotion
in each individual one
cerebral hemisphere is
dominant
