bean-shaped, dark red
inner border = concave= hilum = where ureter, renal blood abdominal cavity below the
vessels and nerves enter and leave kidney diaphragm
surrounded by 3 layers next to the posterior wall on
renal capsule(tough fibrous) = surface= prevent infections either side of vertebral
middle layer of adipose tissue = hold kidney in place and column
cushions it kept in position by being
outer layer of fibrous connective tissue = renal fascia= anchors attached to thin layer of
the kidney to the surrounding structures connective tissue=
peritoneum = large renal

million tiny, tightly packed, tubular units = nephrons
found in cortex and medulla areas Renal corpuscle found in
makeup bulk of the kidney renal cortex made up of:
responsible for removing waste matter from blood = form = Bowman's capsule
functional unit of the kidney = glomerulus- cluster of
capillaries
