2 PURPOSE OF AND OUTCOMES FOR THE MODULE Our main intention with this course is to provide you with an introduction to various approaches in therapy for counselling. We believe that our course will help you to: • be involved in a therapeutic setting as a volunteer and thereby make a contribution to your community • learn about different therapeutic approaches • gain self-insight. To achieve these objectives, we have structured the course around the following focal points: 2.1 Involvement in a therapeutic setting We require that you become involved as a volunteer in any setting where an organisation or an individual tries to help people deal with challenging life situations. In Assignment 01, you will be required to describe the organisation which you have joined and to discuss the nature of your proposed involvement. 2.2 Learning about different therapeutic approaches In order to become acquainted with different therapeutic approaches, you will be required to study some chapters of the textbook on your own. Your examination will consist only of questions set on these chapters. 2.3 Gaining self-insight An important challenge for a therapist is to know him or herself as this forms the basis from which a therapist interacts with a client. Such self-knowledge is gained through one's interaction with clients, through training and being in therapy oneself, and through becoming immersed in a specific therapeutic approach. We suggest that you read as much as possible in order to find a therapeutic approach which will contribute to your personal growth. In Assignment 02, you will be required to discuss a therapeutic approach of your choice. You will also be asked to explain how this approach contributes to your self-insight and personal growth. Assignment 03 is the Exam portfolio. 3 LECTURER(S) AND CONTACT DETAILS Please note that there are different ways to communicate with the University ― by telephone, email and via myUnisa 3.1 Lecturer(s) You can contact us in one of the following ways: 3.1.1 By telephone or email.
