P2: Explain the potential effects of five different life factors on the development of an individual

There are lots of different life factors that affect the development of an individual. These 5 factors
include: Genetic, biological, environmental, socioeconomic and lifestyle. I am now going to explain
these factors.

Genetics’ factor:

Genetics’ play a big role in our existence and make us who we are, we wouldn’t be the same without
them as genetics are what we inherit from our parents, they shape our DNA and our characterises
which are recognisable to our parents such as eye colour, hair colour, skin colour, nose shape, height
and many more. These characterises are an essential part of who we are. Genetic disorders can also
be inherited such as Huntington’s disease which is a progressive brain disorder that causes
emotional problems, uncontrolled movements and loss of thinking ability. Another example of a
genetic disorder would be Marfan syndrome affecting the body’s main connective tissues. The
disorder can be found in features of the body such as the bones, heart, the eyes, the joints and
blood vessels.

In terms of genetics the potential life factor that could affect this individual’s physical development
could be if they had the genetic disorder called brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta). The
disease causes the bones to fracture or break easily as they haven’t developed properly due to not
having or not having enough of the protein called collagen. There are different forms of the disease
which include: Type 1 OI, Type 2 OI, Type 3 OI, Type 4 OI.

The disease causes different symptoms in each type. But overall the symptoms may include: loose
joints, bone deformities, weak teeth, bowed legs and arms, early hearing loss and respiratory
problems. This will affect this individual face significantly as they may not even be able to walk
without any support, they may need to travel around in a wheelchair as walking could put them at
risk of breaking their bones from falling. They may not be able to play sports as they may not be able
to support themselves enough and could lead to further injuries. The disease affects their body
appearance which may affect this individual as they may become self-conscious maybe as a result of
bullying and may need mental health counselling to treat these issues.

Genetics can also affect an individual’s intellectual development. This could be for the individual’s
intelligence as studies have suggested that your intelligence and cognitive abilities may be inherited
from your mother as are more likely to transmit intelligence to their children because they are
carried on the X chromosome and women have two of these, while men only have one. Researchers
