over time (for employees).
 Employment provides opportunities for self-development realizing and utilizing one’s
potential, as well as serving and unifying with others.
 Complex:
- Globalization
- Dynamism in jobs and careers
- Ever-changing employer-employee relationship
 Employability for employers= the potential to match human capital with strategic
objectives and help manage the supply and demand for talent in ever-changing internal
and external labor markets.
 Employers can no longer guarantee lifelong employment  employability is the new
employment security  employees must cultivate their employability to remain relevant
and satisfied in the workforce.
 Employers and employees need each other to compete, survive and thrive.
 Goals of the article:
1. Identify overarching themes in employability research.
2. Narrow focus to research that embeds employability within the employer-employee
relationship.
3. Explicate means for integrating and advancing employability research  SET (social
exchange theory)

 Employability = het vermogen om de huidige functie te kunnen uitoefenen, en een
nieuwe functie te verwerven, of werk te kunnen creëren door het optimaal gebruiken
van aanwezige competities.
 Objectief loopbaan succes = salaris/promotie
 Subjectief loopbaan succes = in hoeverre je jezelf succesvol vindt in je werk.
 Beroepsexpertise = professionele kennis en vaardigheden (domein specifieke), sociale
erkenning (overtuigingskracht)
 Meta-cognitieve kennis = de kennis die je hebt over je eigen kennis
 Anticipatie & optimalisatie = op een pro-actieve manier het voorbereiden op
toekomstige werkveranderingen op een persoonlijke en creatieve manier
 Persoonlijke flexibiliteit = het vermogen om je aan te passen aan veranderingen in het
werk/ transities tussen banen
 Organisatie sensitiviteit = bekwaamheid om in verschillende werkteams te functioneren
 Balans = compromitteren tussen belang van werkgever en werknemer.
