PYC4809 Exam portfolio 2021. PYC4809 - Therapeutic Psychology. The third concept is that of striving for identity and relationships with others. People strive to preserve their uniqueness but are still interesting in being able to relate to others, the problem here is that in most cases we end up being stangers to ourselves as we tend to go to others for direction and answers instead of trusting in our own ability to form decisions. In order to make sure we do not loose ourselves, we need to be able to move forward and endure the situations that cause us exreme anxiety. We need to struggle to create and maintain our own independence so that we are able to have substance to our personalities and our lives. We need to be able to be alone and be okay with that. We need to have another persons presence in our lives, a person who is very important in our world. We need to find fulfilment within who we are and not from what others believe[ CITATION Cra19 l 7177 ]. Searching for meaning and purpose is an innate human characteristic. We constantly need fulfilment. In order to do this the subject needs to discard their old values that are inghibiting them from being able to create their own meaning and purpose. They need to understand that its okay to live in a world with no meaning, because, with help, they will be able to find meaning in their lives. In order to do this, these subjects need to go through logotherapy, a therapeutic technique that allows for the subject to be able to understand that they can have and create meaning in suffering, and use this suffering to create a form of achievement in which they can engage with others[ CITATION Cra19 l 7177 ]. The fifth concept is to come to an understanding that anxiety is a byproduct of living. That this anxiety creates and stimulates growth, as this anxiety allows us to see and experience the concept of freedom[ CITATION Cra19 l 7177 ]. The sixth concept is to become aware of death. In order to truly live, one needs to understand that their days on this earth are measured. One can only truly live and experience freedom by understanding that death makes us able to believe in the significance of the things in our life that happen. Death is how we understand significance. Those who fear death, fear living[ CITATION Cra19 l 7177 ]. It is important to state here that all of these concepts mentioned fall within three main categories, these being freedom, choice and responsibility[CITATION Dar13 p 82 l 7177 ]. These three categories form the basis of all existential therapy. With regards to Linda, the therapist needs to allow her a safe space to come to terms with her freedom, the idea that she has a choice and the responsibility of her actions. It will be the job of the therapist to help Linda see her actions and choices from different perspectives and will help Linda deal with the existential crisis that is sure to follow[CITATION Dry07 p 207 l 7177 ]. The first thing that the therapist would do in order to help Linda is to help her to stop deceiving herself about her lack of responsibility for her actions as well as their huge demands for themselves and their lives[CITATION Dry07 p 214 l 7177 ]. By doing this, it relieves the pressure that the patient is feeling and allows for them to create a clearer basis Downloaded by: ResourceCentre9 | Distribution of this document is illegal Downloaded by: ProudNurse | Distribution of this document is illegal S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material for their ideologies as well as clearer view for their personal thoughts and aspirations[CITATION Dry07 p 214 l 7177 ]. The main thing that Linda will need to learn is to be able to distinguish between things that she can change and the things that she cannot. The main thing that Linda will need to do is allow the therapist to help her in understanding her attitude to life, her inclination, her mood and frame of mind. By doing this she will be able to make sure she will not go back to her old ways. She will be able to distinguish what is real and what isn’t real in her life. She will begin to understand that her use of manipulation is not the correct way to go about relationships. She will be able to fill her life and elevate the emptiness she feels inside. This delusion that any feeling is better than feeling nothing at all will change as her ideals change. She will also be able to find substance in the relationships she has with others. As seen above, existential therapy and the ideas of freedom, responsibility and striving for identity are interlinked. Existential therapy uses these ideas to enact change within patients, how it does this is explained above, using Linda as an example of how the therapist would use the idea’s of freedom, responsibility and identity. Task 2: Self-reflection exercise (3 pages) Discuss how you can apply the person-centred approach to understanding your struggles with reference to therapeutic goals. The therapist’s function and the role and the relationship between therapist and client. (20) - Person centred approach The person centred approach is an approach that is based on the idea that the notion of change is at the centre of the conception of a psychologically healthy individual.[CITATION Mic04 p VIII l 7177 ] The main idea behind person-centred approach is that if a person is able to achieve an unconditional self acceptance or positive self regard will be able to achieve the ability to change and adapt to all situations due to the fact that their development will never be influenced by the judgment of those who are observing the person[CITATION Downloaded by: ResourceCentre9 | Distribution of this document is illegal Downloaded by: ProudNurse | Distribution of this document is illegal S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material Mic04 p IX l 7177 ]. It is important to note that person centred counselling is based in the liberation of the person and that there is an inherent trust in the nature of human beings [CITATION Mic04 p IX l 7177 ]. Rogers, a is widely regarded as one of the most eminent thinkers in psychology who is best known for developing the psychotherapy method called client-centered therapy and for being one of the founders of humanistic psychology[ CITATION Ken20 l 7177 ].He believes that change is an ongoing process and that in order to become a healthy psychological individual one must be able to adapt and change [CITATION Mic04 p 11 l 7177 ]. - Therapeutic goals The therapeutic goals with regards to person-centred therapy can be addressed in 2 ways. The first is to look at and work with the goals of the individual client and what they want to get out of therapy. The second is to look at the over all goals one wants to achieve in order to become and reflect the over all goals that a human being wishes to achieve to reach their full potential[CITATION Nel11 p 84 l 7177 ]. The therapists do not tell their clients how to go about their change and their therapy, its up to the client to come up with their goals and the way that they want to progress with their therapy. One of the main goal in person-centred therapy is to help the client become more intuned with their feelings and the organic progression of their lives. The other main goal comes from Rodgers. His main goals surround the characteristics of the person. Rodgers has around 6 main themes surrounding his idea surrounding goals. These themes include the idea surrounding the fully functioning person and the person of tomorrow. In order to be a fully functioning person, Rodgers believes the following characteristics need to be achieved. These characteristics include that a person must be open to new experiences, they lack the need to be defencive, they are able to interpret their experiences accurately, their self concept is flexible and they have the ability to change through these experiences, they are able to trust their own experiences and use these experiences to form their values, they have an unconditional self regard, they do not feel the need to lie or deny the experiences that they have, they are more open to feedback and are willing to make realistic changes and lastly they are able to live in harmony with other people. Rodgers believes that the person of tomorrow needs to have the following characteristics. The person needs to be able to be open the inner world as well as the outer world, they need to be sceptic about science and technology, they need to have a desire to be a complete human being, they need to have a wish for intimacy, they need to care for others as well as have a closeness to nature, they need to be anti-institutional but also they need to trust the authority within and lastly they need to have an understanding that material items Downloaded by: ResourceCentre9 | Distribution of this document is illegal Downloaded by: ProudNurse | Distribution of this document is illegal S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material S - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material are unimportant and that there needs to be a spiritual aspect in their lives[CITATION Nel11 p 84-85 l 7177 ]
