AFL1501- Portfolio exam 2021

We live in a modern world where English is seen as the universal language of our society. Although this may be true, there are dozens of other languages, especially in South Africa that does not seem to receive the praise they deserve. In March 2021, I started my journey with UNISA as a first-year law student. AFL1501 was one of my modules and I had no idea what to expect. AFL opened my eyes and ears to other South African languages and cultures such as Zulu, Xhosa, Hindi and Moslem, to name a few. Throughout this portfolio I will be sharing my experiences of AFL as a whole and reflect on how I discovered my own language and cultural identity through this module. We as humans have certain language and cultural identities, roles in our communities and gender roles we have to fulfil. In this portfolio I will be reflecting on my blog entry which I submitted at the beginning of the year, discuss six different names from South African languages, elaborate on politeness, talk about cultural paradigm shift and lastly write my final reflection and conclusion with regards to AFL.
