BUSI 411 WEGMANS FOOD MARKET OPERATIONS CASE STUDY
Wegmans Food Market Operations Wegmans is a large grocery store chain that has become the 46th largest private company in the United States, with around 7.4 billion dollars in annual sales (Teti, 2015). Though there are only 86 stores, they are a regional supermarket that has been able to deliver an all around captivating experience to its loyal customers (Teti, 2015). Due to their small number and large profits, the question arises as to how it is that they are able to thrive in such a great way. Wegmans has created value by bringing together the best qualities of all of their competitors and creating an experience that is truly unlike other stores of its kind. Their business model incorporates a large selection of products, an atmosphere that is much like a European open-air market, customer-focused experience, and low prices on popular items through the purchase of family packs (Teti, 2015). To look further into the wonderful operation that Wegmans runs we will discuss the actual operations management concepts, issues that they have faced, and ways in which those issues may be fixed. Operations Management Concepts Operations management, as described in an article in the Management Science journal, is the administration of business practices that concerns the design, production, and delivery of goods and services in the most efficient and least costly way possible (Aviv, Lariviere, & Terwiesch, 2009). This type of management is all about managing the production of goods and services efficiently, all while lowering the cost of the production. There are many concepts in operations management used by many different organizations around the world in order to produce and deliver their goods and services
