SHM: zero acceleration,
maximum speed?
AQA A-level Physics | Three-page quality sample
What is this?
Two real teaching pages from the detailed Circular Motion + SHM pack,
plus an original quick check below. This is a sample, not the full course.
Try it before reading pages 2–3
An ideal SHM oscillator has amplitude 0.040 m and frequency 2.0 Hz.
1. At equilibrium, which is zero: speed or acceleration?
2. Calculate the maximum acceleration magnitude.
3. At the positive turning point, which way does acceleration point?
Answers
1. Acceleration is zero. Speed is maximum, not zero.
2. ω = 2πf = 12.57 rad/s. |a|max = ω²A = 6.3 m/s².
3. Towards equilibrium, in the negative-displacement direction.
