3 SOURCES of Nursing Knowledge
1.) TRADITIONAL: Passed down from generation to generation, such as changing
bedclothes. There is NO research data to support this but hospitals change these linens
daily because this practice is widely accepted as necessary.
2.) AUTHORITATIVE: Comes from an expert + is accepted as truth based on the person's
perceived expertise. For example, when a senior staff nurse teaches a new graduate nurse a
more efficient method of doing a technical procedure.
3.) SCIENTIFIC: Obtained through the scientific method. New ideas are tested + measured
systematically using objective criteria. For example, knowledge about the effects of surgery
+ anesthesia on the body + the side effects of pain medication to develop a postoperative
plan of care.

3 TYPES of Nursing Knowledge
1.) SCIENCE: Observing, identifying, describing, investigating + explaining events +
occurances that are perceived in the world.
2.) PHILOSOPHY: Study of wisdom, fundamental knowledge + the processes used to
develop + construct one's perceptions of life. It provides a viewpoint + implies a system of
values + beliefs. Nurses demonstrate both a personal + professional philosophy.
3.) PROCESS: A series of actions, changes or functions intended to bring about a desired
result, During a process, one takes systematic + continuous steps to meet a goal + uses both
assessments + feedback to direct actions to meet a goal. A particular theory or conceptual
framework directs how these actions are carried out. The delivery of nursing care within the
nursing process is directed by the way specific conceptual frameworks + theories define the
patient, the environment, health + nursing.
