Exploration

The structures that link grana together are called:

Chloroplasts

Lamellas

Stroma

Thylakoids

Which of the following does NOT contain phosphorous?

Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate

RuBisCO

Chlorophyll

Adenosine triphosphate

Exercise 1

1. Based on the chlorophyll data, was there an algal bloom during any of
the years represented in this data set? If so, when did it occur?

From the data presented, it appears there was an algae bloom on September 9th, 2013,
and multiple algae blooms in July 2015 and August 17th, 2015.

2. Observe the patterns in the nutrient data in relation to the chlorophyll
data. What patterns do you observe?

There doesn't appear to be an obvious correlation between the nutrients and chlorophyll,
but it does seem like chlorophyll increases drastically after a spike in nitrogen. In 2013
and 2014, the correlation between phosphorus and chlorophyll seemed to go in the same
direction. Then, in 2015, phosphorus fluctuates up and down, where chlorophyll has one
big spike up and then back down

3. Use your knowledge about the relationship between nutrients and
photosynthesis to explain the trends you observed in the data.

Photosynthesis plays a role in the carbon cycle, which is the main source of oxygen in
the atmosphere. Chlorophyll is important in photosynthesis as it converts carbon to
oxygen. Nitrogen and phosphorus are needed in the soil to feed plants. Nitrogen gives
leaves their color, and phosphorus helps grow new roots, seeds, fruits, and flowers.

4. What is eutrophication? How can excessive nutrients contribute to
eutrophication and what are the possible ramifications? Use external
sources if necessary.

Eutrophication is when an environment becomes enriched with nutrients, causing an
increase in plant and algae growth in coastal waters. The overabundance of plants and
algae leads to dead zones, algae blooms, and dead animal life. This also can produce
large amounts of carbon dioxide lowering pH of seawater, this is called acidification. This
slows the growth of fish and shellfish and prevents future shell formations. The product is
a decrease in food for other animals and humans.
