OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026 EXAMINATION

QUESTION 1 [40 marks]

1.1 Explain, in your own words, to other teachers how you understand
metacognition. (10)

Metacognition can be understood simply as "thinking about thinking" or the ability to
monitor, understand, and regulate one's own learning processes. As teachers, we can
break this down into two main components for our classrooms:

 Metacognitive Knowledge: Learners understanding their own cognitive
strengths and weaknesses (e.g., recognizing that they remember visual
information better than verbal text) and understanding the nature of the task at
hand.
 Metacognitive Regulation: The active control learners have over their learning
processes—which involves planning how to approach a task, monitoring
comprehension while working (asking themselves, "Does this make sense?"),
and evaluating the outcome and strategies used after completing the task.

In a Life Orientation context, fostering metacognition means helping learners move
beyond rote memorization to reflect on how they process emotional information, make
personal choices, or approach problem-solving. When learners develop metacognitive
skills, they become independent, self-regulated lifelong learners who can diagnose their
own academic or personal stumbling blocks and adjust their strategies accordingly.

1.2 How would you assist learners to deal with bullying? (10)
