Food Chain
A sequence of organisms with each one serving as a source of nutrients or energy for the
next level of organisms.
Trophic Level
The feeding positions of all organisms.
Ex: 1) Primary Producers: Plants & Algae (first trophic level)
2) Primary Consumers: Herbivores (second trophic level)
3) Secondary Consumers: Carnivores (third trophic level)
4) Tertiary Consumers: Carnivores & Omnivores (fourth trophic level)
5) Apex Predators: top of food chain (fifth trophic level)

At each trophic level, a lot of energy is lost in the form of heat or is used for maintenance. As
a result, only 10% of energy is transferred to the next trophic level. As such little amount of
energy is transferred, the trophic levels are limited to 3-5 only.
Why are there only a few steps in a food chain?

Decomposers, because without these organisms none of the nutrients would be recycled
back into the ecosystem.
What is the most important trophic level in any community?
Humans would be getting more energy from the plants than they would from meat because
plants have the most energy prior to being consumed.
Why would it be more beneficial for humans to eat vegetables directly than eat meat?
Food Pyramid
A graphic representation of the structure of a food chain, depicted as a pyramid having a
broad base formed by end consumers. Between successive levels, total biomass decreases
as energy is lost from the system.
