For assistance call or W.h.a.t.s.a.p.p us on ...(.+.2.5.4.7.7.9.5.4.0.1.3.2) Question 2 Embryo Transfer (ET) and IVF: These techniques enable valuable or disease-resistant female livestock to produce many offspring within a year, rather than only one, which can speed up genetic improvement in meat and dairy herds. Artificial Insemination (AI): Understanding sperm physiology and embryonic development makes it possible to spread desirable male genetics widely and at relatively low cost. Cryopreservation: Freezing embryos and gametes helps conserve genetic diversity and can provide protection for livestock food-production systems against climate-related disruptions or local disease outbreaks. Genetic Improvement / Selection: Pre-implantation genetic screening can assist farmers in selecting embryos carrying useful characteristics, such as drought tolerance and resistance to pests

QUESTIONS 2–8

Question 2

Embryo Transfer (ET) and In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) are important reproductive
technologies in modern livestock production. They enable farmers to obtain several
offspring from genetically superior female animals within a relatively short period. This is
particularly useful when females possess desirable characteristics such as high milk
production, rapid growth, disease resistance or tolerance to harsh environmental
conditions. By increasing the number of offspring produced from selected females,
these technologies can accelerate genetic improvement in both meat and dairy herds.

Artificial Insemination (AI) involves introducing semen from a selected male into the
reproductive tract of a female without natural mating. Knowledge of sperm physiology,
fertilisation and early embryonic development allows farmers to use semen from
genetically valuable males to produce many offspring. AI is therefore an economical
method of distributing desirable paternal genes across a large population.

Cryopreservation involves preserving sperm, eggs or embryos at very low temperatures
so that their biological activity is greatly reduced. It is useful for maintaining valuable
genetic material for future breeding programmes. The preservation of genetic resources
can also provide a safeguard against the loss of important livestock breeds resulting
from disease outbreaks, environmental changes or climate-related disruptions.

Genetic selection can be further improved through technologies that identify desirable
characteristics before implantation. Pre-implantation genetic testing may allow embryos
with particular useful traits to be identified for transfer. Potentially valuable
characteristics include disease resistance, improved productivity and adaptation to
drought or other environmental stresses. Consequently, reproductive biotechnology can
contribute significantly to sustainable livestock production and long-term genetic
improvement.

Question 3

Testis of a Cat

The cat is a mammal, and its testes are responsible for producing spermatozoa and the
male reproductive hormone testosterone. The seminiferous tubules contain developing
germ cells and Sertoli cells. Between the tubules are Leydig cells, which secrete
testosterone. Sperm produced within the seminiferous tubules eventually pass into the
rete testis and epididymis, where they undergo further maturation.
