II. Subject, Audience, and Purpose (1-2, PPT Slides 7–11)
a. In the prewriting phase, writers should first consider their subject, audience, and purpose.
b. You may be assigned a broad subject to write about, and your job is to narrow that
subject down to one aspect you may be knowledgeable about or that intrigues you.
c. To find or focus your subject, ask yourself:
i. What special experience or expertise do I have?
ii. What inspires, angers, or motivates me? What do I love to do?
iii. What story in the news affected me recently?
iv. What campus, job, or community problem do I have ideas about solving?
d. Next, considering your audience affects how you write about your subject. It will help
you determine what information to include or leave out.
i. An audience could be a general audience and will require more basic and detailed
information.
ii. Or an audience could be experts who expect higher-level information.
e. To determine your audience, ask:
i. For whom am I writing? Who will read this?
ii. How much do they know about the subject? Are they beginners or experts?
iii. Will they likely agree or disagree with my ideas?
iv. Will my readers expect a composition about my personal experience or more
formal, factual material?
f. Finally, your writing must have a purpose. To find this, ask:
i. Am I writing to explain something to my readers?
ii. Am I writing to persuade them that a certain view is correct?
iii. Am I writing to entertain them?
iv. Am I writing to tell them a good story?
v. Some combination of these?
