Hazard is anything that can cause harm. In a health and social care setting ,hazards
can occur in different settings which are; residential care home
setting ,hospital,clinics,surgeries,daycare setting,Pre-school…

Types of hazards include;Physical,Biological,Chemical,Social,Environmental
hazards etc..and they include examples like;

1. Hazard in the Physical In a health care setting for instance , a Day care home,


environment. poor ventilation can be harmful to their health , An


Poor ventilation. example is a situation whereby one of the kids have a flu


if there is no proper ventilation it can increase the risk of


airborne infection to everyone in the room such as


cold,flu, thus in worse cases every kid in the class can get


sick,to reduce the risk, ventilation should be checked


properly as it might cause airborne infection, it is very vital


to have fresh air circulating and proper ventilation.


2)Hazard in the Physical In a health and social care setting for instance a Care


Environment. home Poor lightning can be hazardous to older people or


people with poor vision, if they are poor lightning people

Poor lightning can trip and fall or harm themselves,you should learn to


position people with poor vision in well lit areas,they


should be able to enjoy their activities in well lit areas.


3) Hazards from In a health and social care setting for instance a hospital


Equipment. Poor maintenance of equipment can cause hazards,


Poor maintenance of equipment that are not properly maintained can cause


equipment. hazards for example if an ECG or X-ray machine does


not function well it can lead to incorrect diagnosis ,so


equipment should be checked and maintained regularly.


4) Hazardous work Practice. In a health and social care setting for instance a care


food hygiene hazards home,Food hazards is very risky as older people are


particularly at risk and can contact food- borne infections,


for example putting an older person with weak immune


system food into the microwave can be risky and can


cause harm,food should be monitored closely and


prepared in a clean and tidy environment.
