,PART I — UNDERSTANDING LITERATURE

Lesson 1. What is literature?
Literature is written or spoken work that expresses ideas, emotions, experiences, and
observations about life. It can entertain us, teach us something, challenge our beliefs, or
help us understand other people.

Literature does not have to use difficult words to be meaningful. A short story about a
student who struggles to tell the truth can teach us just as much about human nature as a
long novel.

The two major forms
1. Prose

Prose uses ordinary sentence and paragraph structures. It is commonly found in novels,
short stories, essays, and biographies.

Example: A student finds a lost wallet and must decide whether to return it.

2. Poetry

Poetry uses carefully chosen language, imagery, sound, rhythm, and sometimes rhyme to
express feelings or ideas.

Original example:

The rain taps softly on my door, Reminding me to hope once more.

Common literary genres

Novel A longer fictional A story following a family

Remember: Fiction is invented, while nonfiction is based on real people, events, or
information. Nonfiction may still use creative language, but it should not present
invented facts as true.

Why do we study literature?
● Entertainment: It allows us to enjoy stories and imaginative worlds.
● Understanding: It helps us see situations from different perspectives.
● Reflection: It encourages us to question choices, values, and beliefs.
● Culture: It preserves experiences, traditions, and social realities.
● Communication: It shows how words can express complex thoughts and feelings.

Study tip: When reading any literary work, ask three questions: What is happening?
What does it mean? Why does it matter?
