ASSIGNMENT 5 - SEMESTER 2 2026
GREEN BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN THE
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
1. Introduction
The tourism and hospitality industry depends on natural resources, including water,
energy, land and construction materials. Hotels, resorts and conference facilities require
these resources to provide comfortable accommodation and quality services to their
customers. However, excessive resource consumption, waste generation and
greenhouse gas emissions can place pressure on the environment and undermine the
long-term sustainability of tourism destinations. Green building infrastructure offers a
practical way of addressing these challenges by incorporating environmental
considerations into the design, construction and daily management of hospitality
establishments.
In South Africa, the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) promotes
environmentally responsible construction and building management through certification
systems such as Green Star. These systems provide standards for evaluating the
environmental performance of buildings and encouraging continuous improvement.
Hotel Verde in Cape Town illustrates how sustainability can be incorporated into hotel
design, energy and water management, procurement and everyday operations. This
assignment examines the relationship between green building infrastructure and
sustainable tourism, explains the practical characteristics of green buildings, discusses
the purpose of the GBCSA and the benefits of membership for tourism businesses, and
identifies the practices necessary for a hotel to achieve a six-star Green Star rating.
