1.1 In your own words, briefly describe the literacy state of Lesedi. (5)
Lesedi is demonstrating emergent literacy. Emergent literacy refers to the early
reading, writing, speaking, listening and meaning-making skills that children develop
before they receive formal literacy instruction.
Lesedi shows several important emergent literacy behaviours:
1. He pretends to attend school, showing that he understands the purpose of school
and literacy activities.
2. He looks at a book and interprets the pictures, demonstrating picture reading.
3. He answers his mother's questions appropriately, showing developing oral
language and comprehension.
4. He scribbles using a stick, demonstrating the beginning stages of emergent
writing.
5. He gives meaning and names to his drawings and can tell a story about them,
showing that he understands that marks and drawings can communicate ideas.
Therefore, although Lesedi has not attended preschool, he is developing important
literacy skills through everyday experiences at home.
