Medication administration – resources (drug guide, pharmacists, etc.), 6 rights, routes (PO, IM, etc.),
when to give PO vs IM vs IV, parenteral meds, interactions (three types), assessment, peak, onset,

duration, therapeutic range, storage systems, med errors

• resources: drug guide, pharmacists,
• 6 rights: patient, dose, medication, time, method, documentation
• routes: PO (by mouth), IM (intramuscular), SubQ (subcutaneously),
• parenteral meds: drugs not given by mouth

• interactions:
• — antagonistic: one drug “wins” over another drug
• — synergistic: both drugs work together to produce greater effect.
• — imcompatibliities; can cause adverse reaction to pt by changing/ damaging another drug
(sometimes central line needed)
• assessment:
• peak: when concentration of drug is highest in blood
• onset: time for drug effects to appear (IV: 2-15 minutes), (IM: 15- 30), (PO: 30-60)
• duration: How long the drug is effective in the body
