Kennedy Assassination Continued
--massive manhunt launched for finding shooter; Lee Harvey Oswald was encountered several
times, but did not receive suspicion and told to keep going; shooting area was discovered inside
Texas School Book Depository with material still left behind; rifle found soon after that had
powerful capabilities; witnesses declared that person had been seen in window during shooting
--employees were rounded up with Oswald being only person missing; notice was released with
description; headed towards bus station and was possibly headed towards border, but patrolman
J.D Tippit encountered person and struck down with many bullets; several witnesses saw event
--store manager gathered policemen and informed them that person with description has sneaked
into movie theatre; Oswald was discovered and resisted with physical violence and gunshots, but
officers subdued him and placed him under the homicide department
--Oswald repeatedly denied shooting anybody, but witness chose him from lineup; the forensic
evidence tied his weapon to the scene and was then charged with assassination when discovered
rifle was found registered under his name
--Jack Ruby was nightclub owner who was distraught over presidential assassination; carried out
lower level racketeering before becoming nightclub owner; enjoyed being around action and was
hanging around police department frequently with knowing officers; relationships where officers
could visit clubs without payment for insurance purposes
--Ruby was stressed from business having lesser success with competition; everybody testified
that person was absolutely devastated with intense concern for first lady and children enduring
hardship from ensuing trial; became worse during days approaching Oswald murder
--police announced that assassin would move several blocks down street; Ruby went home and
then parked downtown with favorite dog inside; went inside building where Oswald was being
moved; transfer became longer when postal inspector requested interview and different clothes
were found for transfer
--Ruby approached transfer when finally occurring; was unaware that transfer had been delayed
and was simply approaching action; Oswald brought out and walking through crowd when Ruby
finally sees person and continues going forward; does not break stride and fired revolver round
--revolver round was devastating and killed Oswald quickly; Ruby arrested and brought into the
interrogation room with shocked questions about murder; claimed motivation was simply about
killing person who shot beloved president; apparently believed parades would happen for honor
--Ruby tried and found guilty for first degree murder; given death sentence when defense blown
during trial; imprisoned upon appeal and dying from blood clot that developed during cancerous
illness; even went insane when imprisoned and attempted suicide multiple times while claiming
that conspiracy was being launched against him
--Johnson administration moved quickly and launched commission within week that investigated
assassination; named Warren Commission after chief justice and also included Senator Richard

,Russell, Senator John Sherman Cooper, Representative Hale Boggs, Representative Gerald Ford,
Allen Dulles, and John McCloy
--Arlen Spector chaired commission and gained testimony from hundreds; carried out extensive
material analysis that included film from local Zapruder; film was only thing that carried entire
assassination process from beginning towards finale; presented relatively coherent depiction that
came from elevated position; film footage was sold to Life Magazine and frames published with
several issues
--Warren Commission issued entire report that covered numerous volumes; conclusion was very
simple and stated that Oswald acted alone while firing three shots from the Texas School Book
Depository window; single bullet theory projected that bullet entered shoulder and exited near
neck before entering back of Connally and then exiting at upper chest before entering thigh; the
conclusion encountered criticism since bullet was largely undamaged when recovered
--commission concluded that first shot hit Kennedy before entering Connally and that second
shot was missed; countered with argument that first bullet hit tree and pavement from witness
testimony that pavement sparked and sprayed people with concrete; question was where clock
begins should first shot have missed
--no evidence was found for conspiracy, but doubts for acting alone appeared very quickly; poll
was taken that revealed small majority believed conspiracy existed; numerous theories emerged
during ensuing years; all believed investigation was badly flawed or covered up something
--Mark Lane publish Rush to Judgment; declared that even if Oswald did pull trigger, shooter did
not act alone; does not present conclusive hypothesis for who murdered Kennedy or even express
opinion that Oswald was definitely not guilty, but stated that Warren Commission was too quick
to finger Oswald as only assassin; claimed that investigation was badly handled and ignored key
evidence that could have cast doubt upon guilt for Oswald
--David Lifton published Best Evidence; argued that assassination was conspiracy that involved
government officials; claimed that body had been altered between Parkland Memorial Hospital
and autopsy evaluation; stated that officials took body during airplane flight and perform surgery
that made shots appear from behind when actually coming from the grassy knoll; openly argued
assassination was inside job with secret service involved; Oswald was considered scapegoat man
--Gerald Posner published Case Closed; declared that Oswald acted independently when killing
Kennedy and that Ruby acted independently when killing Oswald; refutes that gunfire came
from the grassy knoll and that the government was involved with the assassination; claimed that
commission had properly investigated assassination and that conspiracy theories made little
sense; argument received critical acclaim, but some people claim inaccuracies affect entire book
--Vincent Bugliosi published Reclaiming History; argue that Oswald committed the assassination
alone and commission accurately conducted investigation; confronted conspiracy arguments and
stated theories were outright deceptions with selective evidence and flawed logic; ridicules every
conspiracy theorist for marginalizing truthful account and erroneously leading public into phony
historical account, hence the title for this literature piece

, --House Select Committee on Assassinations was established in 1976 to investigate the Kennedy
and Martin Luther King assassinations; final report concluded that sound evidence indicated four
shots were fired; conclusion meant there would have been two shooters with one shooter coming
from the grassy knoll, thereby supporting conspiracy; indicated that conspiracy probably did not
involve government, organized crime, or group that opposed Castro
--Jim Garrison was the district attorney for New Orleans; launch investigation into assassination
after receiving several tips from private investigator Jack Martin; Martin had been in altercation
with fellow detective and loudly questioned whether the detective would murder him like with
Kennedy; over next few days, informed Garrison about people who may have been involved in
the assassination of the president
--Jack Martin claimed that anti-Castro activist David Ferrie had been involved; stated that Ferrie
had outlined plans for killing Kennedy and that person may have instructed Oswald how to use a
rifle; pointed out that two people had known each other during service with air patrol and asserts
that Oswald and David Ferrie had been involved with gun running activities against Cuba; also
criticized administration for selling out against communism
--David Ferrie became prime suspect during Jim Garrison investigation, but suspect list expands
from testimony that lawyer Dean Andrews gave before Warren Commission; Andrews claimed
that person named Clay Bertrand had called him and requested services for representing Oswald
once arrested for assassination
--after Ferrie died from health complication, local insurance salesman Perry Russo informed Jim
Garrison that he had known Ferrie and heard him speak about assassinating the president; offer
help for investigation and claimed that David Ferrie had told him beforehand about assassinating
Kennedy; Russo also asserted that Oswald and Ferrie had met with person named Clay Bertrand
at party and discussed plans for coordinating attack against president
--imprisoned criminal Vernon Bundy came forward and declared that public meeting had taken
place between Oswald and person named Clay Shaw; Bundy was imprisoned after violating his
parole agreement related to theft charges; Jim Garrison believed that Clay Shaw had been using
alias Clay Bertrand, which seemed confirmed when Perry Russo identified the person in court
--Jim Garrison brought Clay Shaw before trial, but case son fell apart when the major witnesses
recanted their testimony; Dean Andrews testified that call from Clay Bertrand was figment of his
imagination; Vernon Bundy failed one polygraph exam while Perry Russo failed two polygraph
exams; discredited witness prompted jury to quickly return not guilty verdict after one hour
--Garrison brought perjury cases against recanted witnesses, but verdicts were returned with not
guilty results and person was ordered to leave the witnesses alone; Garrison continued efforts of
proving story until his death
--Officer HB McClain was veteran motorcycle policeman who had been assigned to presidential
motorcade; appeared before House Select Committee on Assassinations when determined that
his radio had been active during assassination; audio recording promotes idea among committee
members that four gunshots were fired with one coming from the grassy knoll
