Module 1
Historical and Political Aspects of Soccer
Module Summary
Early History and Evolution
Soccer grew from many different ball games played with the feet in various parts of the
world since ancient times.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, these games became known as "mob football".
By the Renaissance, the sport moved toward more organized and high-class versions of
the game.
Development in England and the Term "Soccer"
Modern soccer began to take shape in England during the early 19th century.
The first official rules were written at the University of Cambridge in 1848, and later, the
Football Association was formed in London in 1863 to create the "Laws of the Game."
During this time, there were two main versions of the sport: "Association Football" and
"Rugby Football" (which allowed players to use their hands).
To make the names shorter, "Rugby Football" was called "Rugger" and "Association
Football" was called "Soccer."
While most of the world calls the sport "Football," some countries still use the word
"Soccer" to avoid confusion with their own local versions of football.
Soccer as a Tool for Politics, Religion, and Migration
Soccer is more than just a game; it is closely tied to politics, religion, and social
identity.
