, COLLEGE 1: INLEIDING TOT HET VAK

TWINTIG JAAR ONDERZOEK NAAR DE BOZE BURGER – MEER & HAM
(2022)

Na de moord op Pim Fortuyn 20 jaar geleden kwamen de eerste tekenen
van het fenomeen ‘boze burger’. Ondanks zijn moord won LPF veel zetels
wat achteraf gezien een veel grotere impact heeft gehad op de politiek en
samenleving. Sindsdien is er twintig jaar onderzoek gedaan naar wie deze
burgers zijn en wat hen drijft.

De gemene deler bij de ‘boze burger’ is een alarmistische toon over een
gevaarlijk smeulend ongenoegen (revolutionaire trekken). Een
vertrouwensbreuk tussen kiezer en gekozene. Kenmerken:

- Nederlanders zijn over het algemeen tevreden met hun eigen leven
maar dat gaat samen met onbehagen over de samenleving.
o Thema’s zoals fatsoen, samenleven, veiligheid, zorg, migratie
en vertrouwen in de politiek
- Onder laagopgeleiden minder tevredenheid over hun eigen leven,
meer onbehagen over de samenleving, minder vertrouwen in de
politiek, minder tevredenheid over functioneren van de democratie.
- Deze boze burger is niet politiek afgehaakt, maar juist meer dan
gemiddeld maatschappelijk betrokken.
o Een kleine groep voelen vooral ergernis en machteloosheid
en wijzen de politiek aan als schuldige en hebben weinig
vertrouwen in hen en gaan vaker stemmen (vooral PVV)
o Brandstof voor deze ongerustheid = groeiende steun voor
populistische partijen  Ze vertellen de mensen precies
waaronder ze gebukt gaan (veiligheid, migranten) en wijzen op
de puinhopen van bijv. Rutte of de paarse coalitie
- Vervreemding van de politiek (afstand)  maatschappelijke
kloven.
o Mensen voelen zich niet gezien, gehoord of begrepen door de
politiek
- Het onbehagen is niet een-op-een gekoppeld aan de ongelijkheden
(sociaaleconomische thema’s)

Empirisch onderzoek laat zien dat onbehagen breed voorkomt in de tijd,
en dat het afhaken van de democratie of samenleving niet toeneemt.

Hoe kun je nou toch dat gevoel van onbehagen, machteloosheid,
verbroken verbindingen met de politiek verminderen? Het gevoel dat
mensen zich niet gehoord, gezien en begrepen voelen.
