Mastering this test bank turns formulas and definitions into the technical judgment a radiographer uses to
produce diagnostic images at the lowest reasonable dose. Each question links a physical principle to an
exposure decision, so you can predict how a change in technique will alter the image and the patient dose.
The Critical Axioms Cheat Sheet
• Beam production: About 1% of electron energy becomes x-rays and 99% becomes heat.
Bremsstrahlung makes most photons; K characteristic radiation from tungsten needs about 70 kVp.
mAs controls quantity; kVp controls quality.
• Interactions: Photoelectric absorption (rises with Z cubed) creates contrast and patient dose.
Compton scatter fogs the image and exposes staff. Pair production needs at least 1.02 MeV and does
not occur in diagnostic radiology.
• Exposure math: mAs = mA x time. The 15% rule: raise kVp 15% to double exposure. Inverse square
law: I1/I2 = (d2/d1)^2. Density maintenance: mAs2 = mAs1 x (d2/d1)^2. Multiply mAs by the grid
conversion factor when adding a grid.
• Image quality and digital imaging: Small focal spot, short OID, long SID, and short time improve
sharpness. Higher kVp lowers contrast. Gray levels = 2^bits; pixel size = FOV/matrix; Nyquist = 1/(2 x
pitch). Check the exposure indicator and deviation index.
• Protection: Follow ALARA with time, distance, and shielding. Apron minimum is 0.5 mm Pb. Declared
pregnancy limit is 0.5 mSv per month (5 mSv total). Stochastic effects have no threshold; deterministic
effects do.

CATHODE

x-ray beam (about 1% of energy)
Heat (about 99%) is dissipated by the rotating anode and oil.
Line-focus principle: smaller anode angle gives a smaller effective focal spot.
