, 1. Foundations of Pharmacology
What is pharmacology?
• Pharmacology is the scientific study of medicines, their effects, mechanisms, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, interactions, and
safe use.
• Pharmacotherapeutics focuses on the clinical use of medicines to prevent, diagnose, or treat disease.
• Clinical pharmacology applies these principles to patient care and medication safety.
Important terminology
• Indication is the clinical reason for using a medicine.
• Contraindication is a condition in which a medicine should not be used because risk may outweigh benefit.
• A side effect is a predictable secondary effect that may occur at therapeutic doses.
• An adverse drug reaction is an unwanted or harmful response associated with a medicine.
• Toxicity refers to harmful effects caused by excessive exposure or accumulation.
• Tolerance means reduced response after repeated exposure.
Drug names and dosage forms
• Chemical name describes chemical structure; generic name is the standardized non-brand name; brand name is the
manufacturer's trade name.
• Common forms include tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions, injections, creams, patches, inhalers, and suppositories.
• Route and dosage form can affect onset, absorption, convenience, and safety.
Nursing principle
