, AFL1501 PORTFOLIO SEMESTER 2
DUE DATE: 28 OCTOBER 2026
QUESTION 1
1. Module experience Reflection
My learning journey in AFL1501 has changed the way I understand the relationship
between language, identity, culture and community. Before studying the module, I mainly
viewed language as a way of communicating with other people. I understood that people
spoke different languages, but I did not always think deeply about how language is
connected to a person's identity, family history and culture.
During the module, I learned that language is much more than communication. It can
influence how people understand themselves and how they connect with others. I also
learned that names, words, traditions and ways of speaking can carry cultural meanings
that have been passed from one generation to another. This made me realise that language
can help preserve a community's history and values.
My understanding of identity also developed during the module. I learned that identity can
be influenced by language, family, culture, community and personal experiences. A person
can also have more than one cultural or linguistic influence, especially in a diverse country
such as South Africa. This showed me that people should not be judged or defined only by
the language they speak.
What stood out to me most was the connection between language and belonging.
Language can make people feel connected to their family and community because it allows
them to communicate and share cultural knowledge. I also became more aware of the
importance of respecting languages and cultures that are different from my own.
The module therefore helped me move from seeing language simply as a communication
tool to understanding it as an important part of identity, culture and community. I now have
a greater appreciation for South Africa's linguistic and cultural diversity.
