, 1. Units, Dimensions & Errors
Core
• Physical quantity = numerical value × unit.
• Percentage error = (absolute error / measured value) × 100.
• For z = x ± y: ∆z = ∆x + ∆y.
• For z = xy or x/y: ∆z/z = ∆x/x + ∆y/y.
• For z = xn: ∆z/z = |n| ∆x/x.
• Dimensional formula: [MaLbTc].
Common dimensions
• Velocity [LT−1], acceleration [LT−2], force [MLT−2].
• Work/energy [ML2T−2], power [ML2T−3].
• Pressure/stress [ML−1T−2], density [ML−3].
• Momentum [MLT−1], impulse [MLT−1].
• Charge [IT], potential [ML2T−3I−1].
2. Kinematics
Equations of motion
• v = u + at
• s = ut + ½at2
• v2 = u2 + 2as
• s = (u + v)t/2
• Distance in nth second: sn = u + (a/2)(2n − 1)
Graphs & relative motion
• Slope of x–t graph = velocity; slope of v–t graph = acceleration.
• Area under v–t graph = displacement; area under a–t graph = change in velocity.
• Relative velocity: vAB = vA − vB.
Projectile
• Time of flight: T = 2u sinθ/g
2 2
• Maximum height: H = u sin θ/(2g)
2
• Range: R = u sin2θ/g
2 2 2
• Trajectory: y = x tanθ − gx /(2u cos θ)
2
• Maximum range occurs at θ = 45°: Rmax = u /g.
Circular motion
2 2
• ω = v/r; ac = v /r = ω r
2 2
• Fc = mv /r = mω r
• T = 2π/ω = 2πr/v; f = 1/T.
3. Laws of Motion & Friction
Newton's laws
• F = ma; net force = rate of change of momentum.
