What is Developmental Psychopathology?
Psychopathology: refers to frequent, and/or persistent maladaptive patterns of emotion, cognition,
gedrag)
Developmental psychopathology: extends this description to emphasize that these maladaptive
patterns accur in the context of typical development and result in the current and potential impairment
1. Statistical deviance (statistische afwijking): A child who displays too much of any age-
expected behavior (impulsivity/sadness) or too little might have a disorder. How diffrently the
person feels/thinks/act compared others.
2. Sociocultural norms (Culturele normen): Children who fail to conform to age-related, gender-
specific, or culture-relevant expectations might be viewed as challenging, struggling, of
dirordered. How the person is expected to think/feel/act (normen en verwachtingen binnen
3. Mental health perspectives (geestelijke gezondheid): Children who have a negative quality
of life, who function poorly, or who exhibit certain kinds of symptoms might have a disorder.
What experts consider as mental health/illness.
Salient, age-related issues of development (opvallende, leeftijdsgebonden ontwikkelingskwesties)
1. Infancy (babytijd)
Major issue (belangrijkste kwestie): Formation of an effective attachment (vorming van een
effectieve hechting)
Additional issues (aanvullende kwesties): Basis state and arousal regulation (Basistoestand
en arousalregulatie), development of reciprocity (ontwikkeling wederkerigheid), dyadic
regulation of emotion (emotieregulatie).
2. Toddler period (peuterperiode)
Major issue: Guided self-regulation (zelfregulatie)
Additional issues: Increased autonomy (toenemende autonomie), Increased awareness of self
and others (Toenemend bewustzijn van zichzelf en anderen),
Awareness of standards for behavior (Bewustzijn van gedragsnormen), Self-conscious
emotions (Zelfbewuste emoties).
3. Preschool Period (kleuterperiode)
Major issue: Self-regulation (Zelfregulatie)
Additional issues: Self-reliance with support (agency) (Zelfredzaamheid met ondersteuning
handelingsvermogen), Self-management, Expanding social world (Uitbreidende sociale
wereld), Internalization of rules and values (Internalisatie van regels en warden)
4. School Years (schooljaren)
Major issue: Competence (Competentie)
, Additional issues: Personal efficacy (Persoonlijke effectiviteit), Self-integration
(Zelfintegratie), Competence with peers, Competence in school
5. Adolescence (adolescentie)
Major issue: Individuation
Additional issues: Autonomy with connectedness (Autonomie met verbondenheid), Identity,
Peer network competence, Coordinating school, work, and social life
6. Transition to Adulthood (overgang naar volwassenheid)
Major issue: Emancipation
Additional issues: Launching a life course (Een eigen levensloop beginnen),
Financial responsibility, Adult social competence, Coordinating work, training, career, and life
How does it emerge (hoe ontstaat het)
Developmental pathways, stability, and change (Ontwikkelingspaden, stabiliteit en verandering).
2 ontwikkelingspaden:
Equifinality (gelijke uitkomst) is as sets of
differing circumstances that lead to the same
diagnosis. Different beginnings result in similar
outcomes. (Ander beginpunt kan leiden tot
dezelfde uitkomsten)
Multifinality (verschillende uitkomst) is as sets of
similar beginnings that lead to different outcomes.
(dezelfde beginpunten kunnen tot verschillend
resultaat leiden)
Four of the most important things to remember when thinking about developmental pathways are that
(1) change is possible at many points, and (2) change is constrained or enabled by previous
(3) transitions
& turning points shut down/create opportunities (4) developmental coherence
Ontwikkelingspaden omvatten ook verandering en transformatie. Zie hieronder aanvullende
voorbeelden van zigzag of niet lineaire ontwikkelingspaden.
Competence and incompetence
Competence reflects effective functioning in important environments.
academische achterstand).
Continuity and stabilitiy
3 ways in which peoples symptomatology can change over time: Continuity and stability, Discontinuity
and stability, Discontinuity and instability.
Types of continuity:
- Homotypic: stable expression of symptoms (hetzelfde soort symptoom blijft bestaan)
- Heterotypic: symptom expression change with development (het onderliggende probleem blijft
- Cumulative: environment that perpetuates maladaptive style (Opstapeling. Omgeving
versterkt madaptief patroon)
Risk and Resilience factors (Risico en veerkracht).
Risk is defined as increased vulnerability (verhoogde kwetsbaarheid) to disorder. Resilience is defined
as adaptation (or competence) despite adversity (aanpassing ondanks tegenspoed). These factors
can come from individual (child, genetics, cognitive, behavioral, temperament, personality), family
(parent characteristics) and sociocultural (peers, school, neighbourhood, socio-economic status
background, and racial, ethnic, and cultural characteristics)
! : A risk factor for one disorder can be a protected factor for another. And strength-based approach
- Specific (distorted body image).
bepaald type probleem.
- Differential impact (verschillende impact). Een risicofactor heeft niet bij iedereen hetzelfde
effect.
- Timing of risk.
Resilience factors:
- Promotive effects are the characteristics and experiences that support positive developmental
Dus
met of zonder risico).
- Protective effects support positive development in the presence of risk (Beschermende
4 Patterns & Pathways of Protective Factors (4 manieren waarop beschermende factoren werken)
2. Reducing the negative chain of reactions following risk= verminderen van negatieve reeks
(kettingreactie) na risico
3. Establishing and maintaining self-esteem and self-efficacy= helpt bij opbouwen en behouden van
eigenwaarde en zelfeffectiviteit
4. Opening up opportunities for growth= openen van groeimogelijkheden
How do we explain it?
6 models:
1. Physiological models (Fysiologisch model)
Explain DP and behavior trough biological factors and their interaction with the environment. Genes,
brain development and neurochemistry matter.
-Sensitive periods have powerful and enduring impacts (periode waarin de ontwikkeling extra gevoelig
negatief of positief).
2. Psychodynamic models (Sigmund Freud)
Explain DP and behavior trough unconscious (onbewuste) processes, internal conflicts and early
experiences/relationships. Unsolved experiences or conflicts from childhood can continue to influence
devenlopmental later in life.
Psychodynamic approaches continue to emphasize (leggen de nadruk op):
(1) unconscious cognitive, affective and motivational processes
(2) mental representations of self, other, and relationships
(3) the meaningfulness of individual experiences
(4) a developmental perspective focused on the origins of typical and atypical personality in early
childhood and the constantly changing psychological challenges faced by children as they age (kijken
- ID: instinct verlangen
- Superego: morality, regels
- Ego: realism, compromise between ID and superego
3. Behavioral models and cognitive models
Behavioral models explain behavioral through learning and environmental influences. Behavioral is
learned by what happens before and after behavior.
- Classic conditioning (by association hond pavlov, je verbind twee dingen met elkaar)
- Operant conditioning (reinforcement and punishment following behavior (bekrachtiging en
straf)
- social learning/observational learning
The construct of reinforcement is a critical component.
Cognitive models focus on how people process information, thin and interpret situations. Maladaptive
interpretations, beliefs and thoughts patterns can contribute to problematic emotions and behavior.
4. Humanistic models
Emphasize personal growth, self actualization and a positive sense of self. A lack of acceptance can
lead to an incongruent self image and psychological problems. (Behandeling richt zich op empathie,
authenticiteit en het stimuleren van persoonlijke groei)
5. Family models
Explain a child’s development and psychopathology by focusing on family dynamics and interactions.
A system: one change can affect the other members.
Non shared environment: different experiences and outcomes.
6. Sociocultural models
Explain trough the broader social cultural and historical context. Ecological context like home, school
and neighborhood. Cultural norms. Socio economic status (SES). Historical circumstances. Shaped by
culture, social environment, SES, historical circumstances while the child and environment also
influence each other.
How do we diagnose it?
Classification
Classification = a system for describing disorders in categories, groups, or dimensions. It helps us
understand disorders and make decisions about prognosis and treatment.
Diagnoses= the method of assigning children to classification categories (toewijzen aan categorie)
Classification helps understand the causes, course, and treatment of specific problems / Helps
professionals to communicate / Improves research and theory development.
2 types of models
Assumes that there are groups of individuals with relatively similar patterns (vergelijkbare patronen) of
disorders. Distinct categories of boxes (duidelijk onderscheiden van categorieën of hokjes). Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual (DSM).
