CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam
The CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam is a comprehensive assessment offered by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). It is widely recognized as the gold standard for medical assisting professionals. The exam is designed for individuals who have completed an accredited medical assisting program (CAAHEP or ABHES) and tests the knowledge and skills required for clinical, administrative, and general medical assisting roles. The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, of which 180 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. It is administered in four 40-minute segments, totaling approximately 160 minutes of testing time. The content is weighted toward clinical skills (approximately 59%), followed by general knowledge (21%) and administrative tasks (20%). To maintain the credential, candidates must recertify every 60 months either by earning 60 continuing education units (CEUs) or by retaking the exam.
