Assignment 1: Discussion forum
1. Briefly introduce yourself, and provide your myLIFE email address, your
group number and the name of your Teaching Assistant. (4 marks)
My name is Claire Armstrong. I am twenty years old and a first year LLB student. I
was born and raised in Bloemfontein in the Free State but relocated to Durban in
2017 after my father got a job offer. My myLIFE email address is
and I am linked to group SJD1501-21-S2-15T which is
led by Surprise Tsholofelo Mafatsheas as the teacher’s assistant.
2. Why is it important to be ethical in your studies? (100 words, 2 marks)
When studying towards any qualification, whether it be a certificate, higher diploma
or degree, one must always do it in an ethical manner to ensure that the whole
system runs smoothly. Ethics plays a big part in tertiary education. It helps create an
environment where both the student and the teacher know exactly what is expected
of them and knows what to do, or what not to do, to sustain a professional and fair
environment. The ethics put in place also helps to set certain standards of what is
acceptable and what is not to protect both the student’s and the teacher’s interest
(Singh, 2021).
3. What are the consequences of plagiarism? (100 words, 2 marks)
Plagiarism is when you copy another person’s work or ideas and claim them to be
your own. This can be done by any person no matter the qualifications the person
has. When one plagiarises another person’s work or ideas it can result in some
unwanted consequences. In the case of studying at UNISA you walk the risk of your
assignment not being marked. UNISA has a strict no plagiarism policy and does in
no way tolerate it. If you use another person’s work or ideas in your assignments and
do not give the appropriate recognition, you will merely be graded with a zero and
will most probably struggle to obtain access to your examination or grades at the end
of the course.
4. Complete the below declaration.
I Claire Anne Armstrong (Student number: 11836237) am a student registered
for LLB in the year 2021. I hereby declare the following: I am aware
