◉ Describe the effect of the reserve system on the daily lives of
registered Indian people. How did this system help to define Indian
identity among people of Indigenous descent?
Answer: They were subject to a range of prohibitions; denied
franchisement; not allowed to leave reserves without a pass from
the Indian agent; unable to purchase or sell stick, personal
possessions or any other commodity without written permission
from an agent.

This set of rules distanced the Indians and Metis establishing two
different treatments of Indigenous peoples. The Indian-Status (legal
administrative status) became a central feature of their social
identity as well as the major component dividing them. Such
prominent social and cultural change over a period of time leaves a
mark of self-identity.

◉ How do treaty rights affect the identity of Indigenous people in
Saskatchewan?
Answer: People of aboriginal ancestry who were prohibited from
'taking treaty' were those who had declared themselves to be Metis
or receiving half-breed script. People could chose what socio-
cultural group they wanted to be part of.

, ◉ What arguments are advanced by those who contend that present
legal identifications of Indigenous people are arbitrary and should
be ended in favor of an all inclusive Indigenous Identity?
Answer: 1. A. K. Davis stated he found the differences between the
terms 'Treaty Indian' and 'Non Treaty Indian' to be of no significance
when describing the 'Indian way of life' on Indian reserves and Metis
hamlets in Saskatchewan.

2. Treaty Indians, Metis, and other non-status Indigenous peoples
living in towns face similar ranges of problems, life prospects and
living conditions.

3. The distinction cannot be visually made

4. "Those in power are aware that making such normal distinctions
between Canadian Natives has a 'divide and conquer' effect. These
legal distinctions and the separation of federal & provincial
jurisdictions prevent government from meeting their moral
obligations to all Natives. Separate identifiers, such as Indian, Metis,
or Inuit serve no useful purpose in analysis of the socio-cultural
condition of indigenous peoples in Canada they contend that these
terms are tags used by governments for bureaucratic purposes.

◉ How might a leader of an organization of status-Indians refute
such argument?
