According to the American Association of Colleagues of Nursing (2021), there are ten
essential domains that make up the education of an advanced practice nurse (APRN). These
domains are founded on the distinctiveness of the nursing vocation and the multiplicity of
practice settings and how they work collectively to objectify the common morale of nurses as
professionals. These essentials provide the foundation for training those who are engaged in the
nursing career to expose their prospects within the path of their nursing course and pragmatic
involvement (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021).
The first essential domain is the Knowledge for Nursing Practice. This provides context
of how nurses must utilize scientific proficiencies to apply what is known into their practice.
Edification through coursework will be applied, integrated, and demonstrated through the
advanced practice nurse’s career as a result (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021).
The second domain is Person-Centered Care. This core essential is one of the main
foundations of the nurse as an individual. The practicing nurse will acknowledge the patient as a
separate entity and attend to their holistic and individual needs. This places a focus on
empathetic, considerate, humble, and humane care delivered by the nurse to the patient
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021).
Thirdly, is the essential of Population Health. This entails the collaborative duty of
providing healthcare to the public in order to promote disease prevention. The focus of
Population Health is local, provincial, nationwide, and worldwide healthcare involving the
community health, ambulatory, and long-term care. Collaboration is key to concentrating on the
healthcare of many diverse collections of the population (American Association of Colleges of
Nursing, 2021).
