- Proteins are made up of monomers called amino acids
- There are 20 different types of amino acids
Structure:
- The amine and acid groups could be at opposite ends
- The R-group could be on top, bottom, or side depending on orientation
- It is made up of:
- Carbon
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
- Nitrogen
- Sometimes Sulfur
- Some R-groups are polar, non polar or have a sulfur bridge
Example of anabolism by condensation:
- A ribosome condenses two amino acids into a dipeptide forming a peptide bond
- Covalent bonds
- There are 9 essential amino acids which have to be eaten
- The other 11 are made in the body from the essential amino acids
Why are there an infinite possibility of polypeptide:
- Could be any length
- 20 amino acids
- Amino acids can be in any combination or order
Effect of pH and temperature on protein structure:
- Heat can cause denaturation
- vibrations within the molecule breaks intermolecular bonds or interactions
- Changes on the R group
- Does not return to former structure, is permanent
