BTEC Business Level 3
Complete Revision & Assignment Guide

Important: This guide is based primarily on the Pearson BTEC Nationals Business (2016) specification commonly used
in England. The exact units you study depend on your qualification size and centre. Pearson has also introduced newer
Level 3 BTEC National AAQ qualifications, so check your course specification before using this as your only revision
source.

What the qualification covers
BTEC Business Level 3 develops knowledge of how businesses are formed, managed, financed, marketed and
evaluated. It also expects you to apply business theory to real organisations and make supported judgements.

For the Pearson Level 3 National Extended Certificate, the three mandatory units are Unit 1 Exploring Business, Unit 2
Developing a Marketing Campaign and Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance, plus one optional unit. Larger
qualifications include additional units.

This guide focuses heavily on the most commonly encountered core content and also summarises wider Level 3
business topics.

Unit 1: Exploring Business
1.1 Types and purposes of business
Businesses provide goods or services to satisfy customer needs and wants. Private-sector businesses usually aim to
make a profit, while public-sector organisations provide services or pursue social/economic objectives. Third-sector
organisations, such as charities, usually focus on a social purpose.

Sole trader
One owner controls the business. Advantages include simple formation, privacy and control. Disadvantages include
unlimited liability, limited access to finance and the owner carrying most responsibility.

Partnership
Two or more people share ownership, responsibilities, profits and risks. A major issue can be disagreement between
partners. Liability depends on the legal form of the partnership.

Private limited company (Ltd)
A separate legal entity owned by shareholders. Shares are not normally offered to the general public. Limited liability
protects shareholders from being personally responsible for most company debts beyond their investment.

Public limited company (plc)
A limited company whose shares can be offered to the public, subject to legal requirements. It can potentially raise
substantial finance but faces greater regulation and disclosure requirements.

Social enterprise
A business that trades to achieve a social or environmental purpose. Profit may be reinvested to support the mission.

Aims and objectives
Aim = broad long-term intention. Objective = specific target used to achieve an aim. Common objectives include
survival, profit maximisation, growth, increasing market share, customer satisfaction, quality, ethical goals and
environmental sustainability.

SMART objectives

, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Relevant and Time-bound. Example: increase online sales by 10% within
12 months.

Stakeholders
Stakeholders are people or groups affected by, or able to affect, a business. Internal stakeholders include employees
and managers. External stakeholders include customers, suppliers, government, lenders, competitors and local
communities.

Stakeholder conflict
Different stakeholders can want different outcomes. Owners may want higher dividends, while employees may want
higher wages. Customers may want lower prices, while the business may want higher profit margins.

Business sectors
Primary: extraction of raw materials. Secondary: manufacturing and construction. Tertiary: services. Quaternary:
knowledge/information-based activities such as advanced research and some technology services.

Functional areas
Marketing identifies and satisfies customer needs. Finance manages money and financial information. Human
resources manages employees. Operations produces goods/services. Procurement purchases resources. IT supports
information systems.

Business ownership and growth
Growth methods
Organic/internal growth happens using the business's own resources, such as opening new branches or increasing
production. External growth occurs through mergers, acquisitions or other combinations with another organisation.

Merger vs takeover
A merger combines businesses by agreement. A takeover occurs when one business obtains control of another.

Economies of scale
As output increases, average cost per unit may fall. Examples include purchasing economies, technical economies,
financial economies, managerial economies and marketing economies.

Diseconomies of scale
If a business becomes too large, average costs can rise because communication, coordination and management
become more difficult.

Franchising
A franchisee pays for the right to use an established brand and business model. The franchisor provides support and
controls standards. The franchisee gains a recognised brand but has less independence and pays fees/royalties.

External environment
PESTLE
Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental factors. Use it to explain how the external
environment can create opportunities or threats.

SWOT
Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors. Opportunities and threats are external factors. A good SWOT does
more than list points: explain why each factor matters to the business.
