Chapter: Human Reproduction
Detailed Study Notes
1. Introduction
Human reproduction is a biological process through which new individuals are produced. Humans reproduce
sexually, involving male and female gametes. The reproductive system is specialized for gamete production,
transport, fertilisation, implantation, embryonic development, pregnancy, childbirth and lactation.
2. Male Reproductive System
The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes, accessory ducts, accessory glands and external
genitalia. The testes are located in the scrotum, where the temperature is maintained slightly below body
temperature, which supports normal sperm production.
3. Testes and Seminiferous Tubules
Each testis contains numerous testicular lobules. Each lobule contains seminiferous tubules, where sperm
formation occurs. Sertoli cells provide support and nourishment to developing germ cells. Leydig cells are
present between seminiferous tubules and secrete androgens, mainly testosterone.
4. Accessory Ducts and Glands
The male ducts include rete testis, vasa efferentia, epididymis, vas deferens, ejaculatory duct and urethra.
Accessory glands include seminal vesicles, prostate gland and bulbourethral glands. Their secretions contribute
to semen and support sperm function.
5. Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina and external
genitalia. The ovaries produce ova and secrete estrogen and progesterone. The oviduct has infundibulum,
ampulla and isthmus. Fertilisation normally occurs at the ampullary-isthmic junction.
6. Uterus and Vagina
The uterus is a muscular organ where implantation and development occur. Its wall has perimetrium,
myometrium and endometrium. The endometrium undergoes cyclic changes and is the site of implantation. The
cervix is the lower part of the uterus and the cervical canal with the vagina forms the birth canal.
7. Spermatogenesis
Spermatogenesis is the formation of spermatozoa from spermatogonia in the seminiferous tubules. It begins at
puberty. The sequence is: spermatogonia → primary spermatocyte → secondary spermatocytes → spermatids
→ spermatozoa. Spermiogenesis is the transformation of spermatids into spermatozoa, while spermiation is
