ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Ultra-Premium Handwritten Study Notes
CHAPTER IDEA
Organic Chemistry is presented as a major foundation for Class 12 Chemistry. The lecture
emphasizes understanding concepts rather than learning them without understanding.
WHY THIS CHAPTER MATTERS
The source repeatedly stresses that these concepts will appear throughout Class 12 Organic
Chemistry. Keep and revise these notes carefully.

, 1. CARBON — THE MAIN ELEMENT
KEY CONCEPT
Carbon is the central element of Organic Chemistry. Its versatile nature makes it capable of forming a
very large variety of compounds.
Five important properties
1. Tetravalency — carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell and forms four covalent bonds.
2. Catenation — carbon atoms can form long chains with identical carbon atoms.
REMEMBER
Carbon's valency = 4. Carbon cannot form more than four covalent bonds.
Carbon chains can contain 10, 20, 30, 50, 60 or many more carbon atoms.
