AND PROTECTION OF
CONCRETE STRUCTURES
,Why corrosion matters
Reinforcement corrosion is one of the main forms of
deterioration in reinforced concrete because it turns
an initially electrochemical problem into a loss of
material performance and, over time, reduced
performance of the structural member. The process
can cause cracking, spalling, bond loss, and
reduction of the steel cross-section. An effective
approach combines prevention, diagnosis,
protection, and planned maintenance.
Typical deterioration with cracking, rust staining, spalling, and
exposed steel.
,Reinforced concrete as a system
Concrete provides alkalinity, physical cover, and a
pore network that controls the transport of water,
oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ions. Reinforcement
provides tensile capacity and relies on the steel–
concrete interface to transfer forces. Durability
therefore results from the integrated behavior of
concrete, steel, cracks, the environment, and
construction quality.

, Durability and service life
Durability requires coordinated decisions in design, construction, and maintenance throughout the service
period.
Dimension Key question Expected outcome
Environment Which agents and cycles reach the surface? Appropriate exposure class
Material Will the concrete limit the transport of water and Appropriate microstructure and properties
ions?
Geometry Are cover, cracking, and drainage controlled? Reduced access to the steel
Construction Will the design intent be achieved during Curing, consolidation, and cover within
construction? specification
Maintenance How will changes be detected and treated over Intervention before extensive damage
time?
