9th Class Chemistry — Important Long-Question Notes
Prepared from the chapters identified in the supplied YouTube video: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10.

Important: The accessible YouTube page confirms the six chapters covered, but it does not expose the video's full
spoken transcript. Therefore, these are clean board-style long-question notes for those same chapters, not a
word-for-word transcript of the video.

Chapter 1 — States of Matter and Phase Changes
Q1. Explain the three common states of matter and compare their properties.
Answer: Solids have a fixed shape and fixed volume because their particles are closely packed and mainly vibrate about
fixed positions. Liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container because their particles can move past
one another. Gases have neither fixed shape nor fixed volume because their particles are far apart and move freely.

Q2. Explain the changes of state of matter.
Answer: Melting is solid → liquid; freezing is liquid → solid; vaporization is liquid → gas; condensation is gas → liquid;
sublimation is solid → gas directly; deposition is gas → solid directly. Heating generally supplies energy to particles, while
cooling removes energy.

Q3. Explain diffusion and its relation to particle motion.
Answer: Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower
concentration. It occurs because particles are in continuous random motion. Diffusion is generally faster in gases than in
liquids because gas particles move more freely.
■ Exam Tip: Write the definition first, then explain the concept in points and include an example/equation where
relevant.

, Chapter 2 — Atomic Structure
Q1. Describe the structure of an atom.
Answer: An atom contains a tiny nucleus made of protons and neutrons, with electrons occupying regions around the
nucleus. Protons carry positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons carry negative charge. In a neutral atom,
the number of protons equals the number of electrons.

Q2. Define atomic number, mass number and isotopes.
Answer: Atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in an atom. Mass number (A) is the total number of protons and
neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but different numbers of neutrons.

Q3. Explain Bohr's model of the atom.
Answer: Bohr proposed that electrons occupy definite energy levels around the nucleus. Electrons can move between
energy levels by absorbing or releasing a specific amount of energy. The model helped explain the line spectra of
hydrogen.
■ Exam Tip: Write the definition first, then explain the concept in points and include an example/equation where
relevant.
