BIO 1050 EXAM 2 ECU SOLVED QUESTIONS
AND VERIFIED SOLUTIONS

◉ What is the difference between phagocytosis and pinocytosis?
Answer: Phagocytosis is the process by which large particles, such as
cells or relatively large particles, are taken in by a cell. The condition
of "cell eating".The cell membrane surrounds the particle and
engulfs it. Pinocytosis is a process that takes in molecules, including
water, which the cell needs from the extracellular fluid "cell
drinking".The cell membrane invaginates, surrounds a small volume
of fluid, and pinches off.

◉ What is receptor-mediated endocytosis?
Answer: Receptor proteins on the cell surface are used to capture a
specific target molecule. The receptors, which are transmembrane
proteins, cluster in regions of the plasma membrane called coated
pits. Although its intentions are to bring useful substances in the cell,
other less friendly particles may gain entry by the same route. EX: flu
viruses, diphtheria, and cholera toxin all use the same route.

◉ What is the difference between kinetic energy and potential
energy?
Answer: Kinetic energy-energy of motion, any object in motion. EX: a
person walking, a thrown baseball, etc.

, Potential energy-energy caused by its position, also called
mechanical energy, stored energy.
EX: the heavy ball of a demolition machine is storing energy when it
is held at an elevated position.

◉ Is ATP (chemical energy) a form of kinetic energy or potential
energy?
Answer: ATP is a complex molecule that stores cellular energy in
chemical bonds (potential energy). When these bonds are broken in
a chemical reaction they release this stored energy and the cell uses
this energy to function (kinetic energy). So, ATP is a molecule that
can either store potential energy or release kinetic energy.

◉ What are the first and second laws of thermodynamics?
Answer: First; Energy cant be created or destroyed but it can be
changed
Second; when energy changes from one form to another form, or
matter moves freely, entropy in a closed system increases.

◉ What is entropy and how does it relate to the laws of
thermodynamics?
Answer: NEED ANSWER

◉ What is the difference between endergonic and exergonic
reactions?
