DIFFERENTIAL
EQUATION

,1. INTRODUCTION
An equation containing an independent variable, dependent variable and di
coefficients of dependent variable with respect to independent variable is called a di
equation.
For example, the following are differential equations involving the unknown function

An differential equation in an ordinary differential equation if the unknown function
on only one independent variable.
If the unknown function depends on two or more independent variables the di
equation is a partial differential equation. We will confine ourselves to the
differential equations only in this chapter.

,2. ORDER AND DEGREE OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS:
The order of a differential equation is the order of the highest derivative which oc
degree of a differential equation which can be written as a polynomial in the derivati
degree of the highest order derivative which then occurs.
Thus is a differential equation of first order and fifth degree, while is a differential
of fourth order and first degree.
