, A. Instructional Goal:
● Instructional Goal: Students will be able to identify the value of coins and be able to
solve problems involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
● Grade Level: 2nd
● The specific instructional goal will be to increase my students’ ability to solve problems
involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies by teaching them, providing them with
different representations of the learning and teaching them multiple strategies. Students
will have many opportunities to work with hands-on manipulatives and to work
cooperatively in groups. My goal will help support student learning, thinking, and
engagement by offering them a variety of ways to learn the information and by providing
them with manipulatives to help make a real-life connection.
A1. Instructional Strategies:
The first instructional strategy I used throughout this lesson was providing all of my
students with coin manipulatives. I chose this instructional strategy because it is important for all
students to be able to connect their learning to real-life experiences. This is especially important
for my students who are learning English as a second language because it incorporates hands-
on learning with the understanding of different coins having different values.
The second instructional strategy I used was providing visuals and leading them in daily
skip-counting practices. This is important in order to help them to recognize the different values
of the different coins and how to add them together. It is also crucial to provide visuals for
students to have access to the vocabulary and values each coin has. Practicing skip-counting
and going over the lesson’s vocabulary will help in building a bridge between abstract coin
values and concrete understanding.
