Questions And Answers 2025 \2026

6a) With reference to Extract A, explain what is meant by a 'regional trade agreement' (Extract A, line 7).
[5 marks] - CORRECT ANSWER-Countries agree to reduce trade restrictions between members. To try
promote trade between each other. Agreed by 41 of Africa's 55 countries "African Continental Free Trade
Area"

Will lead to reducing tariffs between member countries and reduced quotas.

6b) With reference to Extract A, examine two causes of the high cost of transporting goods between
African countries. [8 marks] - CORRECT ANSWER-One cause is the poor quality of road networks. The
poor quality infrastructure, there are "not enough" roads, will cause delays which will increase costs.
Although investment from China into infrastructure in Africa will solve this problem in the future.

Another cause is long waiting times at borders. It takes a long time to move goods between African
countries. "Many were there for days". Although it is hard to suggest the main reasons why there are
high costs of transporting as it is due to a combination of factors, not just long waiting times at borders.

6c) Discuss the impact of improved transport links between African countries on economic growth rates.
[12 marks] - CORRECT ANSWER-If firms can move their goods more quickly and cheaply across borders
by improving infrastructure e.g roads, they will be more willing to export leading to economic growth,
which leads to an increase in LRAS of the economy as infrastructure improves. Although, African
governments may lack funding to improve infrastructure, and by doing so may make the national debt
worse, which will hinder growth in the future.

Also an increase in trade, as a result of improved transport links, will lead to an increase in employment
as there is a greater demand for workers, therefore increasing economic growth. Although reducing
tariffs could be a quicker way to boost development than improving infrastructure (IMF says it could
boost trade by 15% to 25%).
